Inspired by History to Continue Financial Growth

Looking back at historical gains in real estate for BIPOC communities has inspired us to look forward to wider progress in wealth for underrepresented communities.

This year, after researching how far the U.S. has come in black home and commercial real estate ownership, we decided to broaden our focus on “real estate investment and development” for historically underrepresented communities to “financial literacy, investment, and wealth management” for these communities. Yes, it’s fact that historically, wealth building potential for black Americans in the U.S. was greatly limited by home value appraisal bias and the practice of redlining (characterized by widespread mortgage denial rates for black applicants) in desirable neighborhoods and in commercial real estate. For the few black Americans that could get mortgages, their interest rates were much higher than those of white applicants with similar credit profiles (Forbes, 2025). Fortunately, the Fair Housing Act, was passed in 1968, prohibiting discrimination in mortgage lending and housing based on race, sex, religion, and national origin.

Communities that have been historically underrepresented in real estate ownership and investment have also faced similar obstacles in general investing. Discrimination in business loan lending and racism within the insurance industry have steadily decreased over the last few decades. According to data from recent studies and surveys, the stock market participation gap between young black and white Americans is closing (Investopedia, 2025).

While this progress is inspiring, communities historically underrepresented in investment and wealth management still face historic and socioeconomic barriers to wealth (San Diego Foundation, 2022), such as lack of financial education and generational wealth. Understandably, Wyndham Ashley Capital Group is enthusiastic and passionate about helping to close this gap! We look forward to providing financial literacy and investment education to underrepresented communities.
